Teff porridge

grainChoking risk: lowIron-rich

When can babies have Teff porridge?

Teff porridge may be introduced as soon as your baby is ready to start solids, which is generally around 6 months of age. As with all grains, ensure the teff is cooked until very soft and has a smooth, spoonable consistency that is easy for your baby to manage. There are no common allergens in teff, making it a gentle choice for early feeding.

Is Teff porridge healthy for babies?

Teff is an excellent source of iron, which supports healthy brain development and helps prevent iron deficiency anaemia in babies. It also provides good amounts of calcium, fibre, and B vitamins, all of which support bone health, digestion, and overall growth. The naturally mild flavour of teff makes it a versatile base for mixing with other nutrient-rich foods.

Lower-risk serving reminders

Teff porridge has a low choking risk because the tiny grains cook down into a soft, porridge-like texture that is easy for babies to swallow. When prepared with adequate liquid, the porridge is smooth and does not form lumps or dry clumps that could pose a choking hazard.

Allergen introduction checklist

Teff is not a common allergen and is naturally free from gluten, making it suitable for babies with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity. As with any new food, introduce teff on its own and watch for any signs of an adverse reaction, though these are rare.

General feeding checklist

Readiness signs to check

  • Baby can sit upright with minimal support during meals.
  • Hands and mouth coordinate for bringing food to the mouth.
  • Tongue-thrust reflex is reduced, so food is not immediately pushed out.
  • Interest in self-feeding and opening mouth for food cues is visible.

Pause and seek advice if

  • Coughing is persistent or distress does not settle quickly during meals.
  • You notice repeated vomiting, rash, swelling, wheeze, or breathing changes after a food.
  • Baby struggles with swallowing progression over multiple meals despite texture adjustments.
  • There is a known medical condition affecting feeding, growth, or airway safety.
