Wheat berry soft — prep card

Category: grainChoking risk: lowProtein-richAllergens: Wheat / gluten

6–8 months

Cook wheat berries until very soft and tender, then mix them with breast milk, formula, or full-fat yogurt to create a porridge-like consistency that's easier for young babies to manage. You can also mash them into purées or thick mixtures with vegetables or fruit, or serve them on a preloaded spoon. The binding ingredient helps the small grains clump together, making them easier for babies to scoop and bring to their mouths.

9–11 months

Continue offering well-cooked wheat berries mixed into yogurt, porridge, or mashed vegetables, or let your baby practise scooping loose grains with a preloaded spoon. You can also form the cooked grains into soft patties or balls mixed with mashed vegetables, egg, or nut butter to make them easier to grasp. As your baby's pincer grasp develops, they may begin picking up individual grains, though this can be challenging.

12–24 months

Serve soft wheat berries as part of family meals, stirred into soups, stews, or grain salads, or mixed with chopped vegetables and proteins. You can continue offering them loose for utensil practice or shaped into patties, fritters, or balls that toddlers can pick up with their hands. At this age, toddlers can manage wheat berries in a wider variety of textures and preparations as their chewing skills improve.

Nutrition highlights

Wheat berries are whole grains that provide protein, fibre, and B vitamins, which support your baby's energy production and digestive health. They also contain iron, though not in particularly high amounts, along with minerals like magnesium and zinc that contribute to overall growth and development. As a whole grain, wheat berries retain more nutrients than refined wheat products.

Allergen information

Wheat berries contain wheat, which is one of the most common food allergens in children. When introducing wheat for the first time, offer a small amount and watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/wheat-berry-soft
