Baby-led weaning · age-specific guide

Soy milk in porridge for 9–11 months

Soy milk in porridge can be introduced from around 6 months of age, as soon as your baby is ready to start solid foods. Soy milk is a common allergen, so it's important to introduce it carefully and watch for signs of a reaction. Choose unsweetened, fortified soy milk when making porridge for babies.

How to serve at 9–11 months

Continue to cook oats with soy milk, but you can now make the porridge slightly thicker as your baby's eating skills develop. The porridge should still be soft and easy to scoop with fingers or a spoon. You might also try rolled oats soaked overnight in soy milk for a no-cook option, ensuring the texture is soft enough for your baby to manage.

Nutrition highlights

Fortified soy milk provides protein, which supports growth and tissue development, and is often enriched with calcium and vitamin D for bone health. Many soy milks are also fortified with vitamin B12, which is important for brain development and healthy blood cells. When soy milk is used to make porridge with iron-fortified oats, it contributes to a balanced meal that supports your baby's overall nutrition.

Lower-risk serving reminders

Soy milk in porridge carries a low choking risk because the liquid is absorbed into the oats or grains, creating a soft, smooth texture that babies can safely manage. The consistency can be adjusted by adding more or less liquid to suit your baby's current eating skills.

Allergen information

Soy is one of the top allergens and should be introduced early and often, as with all allergens. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, vomiting, or difficulty breathing after introducing soy milk for the first time.

Common questions

Can I use soy milk instead of cow's milk in porridge for my baby?

Yes, unsweetened fortified soy milk is a suitable alternative to cow's milk in porridge from 6 months. Choose a product fortified with calcium and vitamins to ensure your baby receives similar nutrients.

Does soy milk in porridge need to be cooked or can I serve it cold?

Porridge made with soy milk should be cooked as you would with any other milk, then cooled to a safe temperature before serving. Cold overnight oats made with soy milk can be offered from around 9 months once your baby is comfortable with thicker textures.

How much soy milk in porridge should I offer my baby?

Offer a small amount to start, such as 1 to 2 tablespoons of prepared porridge, and let your baby guide how much they eat. Soy milk used in cooking does not count towards daily milk intake, as most is absorbed into the oats.

General feeding checklist

Readiness signs to check

  • Baby can sit upright with minimal support during meals.
  • Hands and mouth coordinate for bringing food to the mouth.
  • Tongue-thrust reflex is reduced, so food is not immediately pushed out.
  • Interest in self-feeding and opening mouth for food cues is visible.

Pause and seek advice if

  • Coughing is persistent or distress does not settle quickly during meals.
  • You notice repeated vomiting, rash, swelling, wheeze, or breathing changes after a food.
  • Baby struggles with swallowing progression over multiple meals despite texture adjustments.
  • There is a known medical condition affecting feeding, growth, or airway safety.
