Rice white soft — prep card

Category: grainChoking risk: low

6–8 months

Cook white rice until very soft and tender, erring on the side of slightly overcooked. Mix the cooked rice with breast milk, formula, or full-fat plain yogurt to create a sticky, mashable texture that holds together when scooped. Serve in a small bowl for baby to dip hands into, or pre-load a spoon and place it on the tray for self-feeding practice.

9–11 months

Continue offering well-cooked white rice, either loose for scooping practice or formed into soft, palm-sized rice balls or patties that baby can pick up independently. You can mix rice with finely chopped cooked vegetables, lentils, or shredded meat to boost nutrition and flavour. Encourage self-feeding with a pre-loaded spoon or by allowing baby to use their developing pincer grasp to pick up small clumps.

12–24 months

Serve white rice as part of family meals, either loose alongside other foods or shaped into rice balls, fritters, or patties for easy handling. Toddlers at this age can manage a wider variety of textures, so rice can be offered plain, mixed into stir-fries, or served with sauces and proteins. Offer child-safe cutlery to encourage independent spoon use, though hands are still perfectly acceptable.

Nutrition highlights

White rice provides carbohydrates for energy, which helps fuel your baby's growth and activity. It contains small amounts of B vitamins and some minerals, though it is lower in fibre and nutrients compared to brown rice due to the removal of the bran and germ during processing. White rice is easy to digest and can be a gentle option for babies with sensitive tummies.

Allergen information

White rice is not a common allergen and is generally well-tolerated by babies, making it a suitable early food. Rice allergy is rare but possible, so watch for signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, vomiting, or difficulty breathing after introducing it for the first time.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/rice-white-soft
