Orange — prep card

Category: fruitChoking risk: low

6–8 months

Choose very ripe, soft oranges and peel them completely, removing all white pith and tough membranes from individual segments. Offer large pieces such as a whole peeled segment or a wide wedge with a bit of pith left on as a handle for your baby to suck and gnaw. You can also offer a thick wedge of peeled orange (about the size of an adult finger) so baby can hold one end and suck the juice and soft flesh from the other.

9–11 months

Continue to peel oranges completely and remove all membranes and seeds. Cut peeled segments into strips or smaller pieces that your baby can pick up with their developing pincer grasp. Ensure pieces are soft enough to squish easily between your fingers, as firmer oranges can still pose a challenge at this age.

12–24 months

Offer bite-sized pieces of peeled orange segments with membranes removed, cut to a safe size (roughly the size of a chickpea). You can also offer whole peeled segments if your toddler has mature chewing skills, though continuing to quarter round segments lengthwise reduces risk. Always supervise and ensure your child is seated upright whilst eating.

Nutrition highlights

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, which supports immune function and helps the body absorb iron from plant-based foods. They also provide fibre to support healthy digestion and contain folate, which is important for growth and development. The natural sugars in oranges provide quick energy, whilst the high water content helps keep babies hydrated.

Allergen information

Orange is not classified as a common allergen. However, citrus fruits can occasionally cause oral allergy syndrome or skin irritation due to their acidity, which is typically harmless and resolves on its own.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/orange
