Oat porridge — prep card

6–8 months

Cook oats with water, breast milk, or formula until very soft and thick enough to hold its shape on a spoon. The porridge should be sticky and clump together rather than runny. Offer on a pre-loaded spoon for baby to grasp and bring to their mouth, or spread a thick layer onto lightly toasted strips of bread for easier gripping. You can also let baby dip their hands directly into a small bowl to explore the texture.

9–11 months

Continue offering thick porridge for self-feeding with a pre-loaded spoon or allow baby to scoop independently using their own spoon. At this age, you can shape cooled porridge into soft patties or balls that baby can pick up with developing pincer grasp. Spread porridge onto toast fingers or rice cakes for an easy-to-hold option, or serve in a suction bowl for independent scooping practice.

12–24 months

Toddlers can manage thinner porridge in a bowl and practise using utensils more independently, though messiness is still normal and expected. Shape leftover porridge into fingers or small patties, then lightly toast or pan-fry for a portable finger food. You can also bake porridge mixture into muffins or bars for snacks, adding mashed fruit, nut butter, or ground seeds for extra nutrition.

Nutrition highlights

Oat porridge provides iron, which supports healthy brain development and helps prevent iron deficiency anaemia, particularly important for babies from 6 months onwards when iron stores from birth begin to deplete. It also offers protein for growth and development, along with fibre to support healthy digestion. Oats contain beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that supports heart health and provides sustained energy for active babies.

Allergen information

Oats are not a common allergen and do not contain gluten proteins, though cross-contamination with gluten-containing grains can occur during processing. True oat allergy is rare, though some babies with coeliac disease may need to avoid oats initially until the condition is well managed.
