Kidney bean mashed — prep card

6–8 months

Mash fully cooked kidney beans until smooth or slightly chunky, depending on your baby's tolerance for texture. Remove any loose skins that may have separated during cooking, as these can stick to the roof of the mouth. Serve the mash on a preloaded spoon for your baby to grasp, spread thinly on toast strips, or mix into porridge or mashed vegetables for added nutrition.

9–11 months

Continue to offer mashed kidney beans, or try smashing them lightly with a fork to leave more texture as your baby develops their chewing skills. You can also shape mashed kidney beans into soft, easy-to-hold patties or mix them into pasta, rice, or vegetable dishes. If offering whole beans, ensure they are very soft and flatten each one between your fingers first to reduce choking risk.

12–24 months

At this age, you can offer mashed kidney beans mixed into family meals such as chilli, stews, or curries with a texture your toddler can manage. Soft whole kidney beans can be introduced if your child is chewing well, though flattening them slightly is still a good precaution. Encourage self-feeding with a spoon or fork to support developing fine motor skills.

Nutrition highlights

Kidney beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein and iron, both of which support healthy growth and development in babies. They also provide fibre to support digestive health, as well as folate, potassium, and magnesium. The iron in kidney beans is better absorbed when served alongside vitamin C-rich foods like tomatoes or peppers.

Allergen information

Kidney beans are not considered a common allergen and allergic reactions to legumes are relatively rare. However, some children with peanut or soya allergies may also react to other legumes, so watch for signs of a reaction when introducing kidney beans for the first time.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/kidney-bean-mashed
