Cream of wheat — prep card

Category: grainChoking risk: lowProtein-richAllergens: Wheat / gluten

6–8 months

Cook cream of wheat according to the package instructions until it is very soft and smooth. Mix it with breast milk, formula, or plain yoghurt to create a thick, porridge-like consistency that holds together on a spoon, making it easier for your baby to scoop or self-feed. You can offer it on a pre-loaded spoon for your baby to bring to their mouth, or let them dip their hands into a bowl and explore the texture by licking it from their fingers.

9–11 months

Continue to serve cream of wheat as a thick porridge for spoon practice, or try forming cooled, cooked cream of wheat into soft patties or balls that your baby can pick up with their fingers. You can mix in mashed fruit, nut or seed butter, or yoghurt for added flavour and nutrition. At this stage, many babies enjoy practising their pincer grasp by picking up small, soft pieces or scooping with a spoon on their own.

12–24 months

Serve cream of wheat as a bowl of porridge with toppings like berries, banana slices, or a drizzle of nut butter, encouraging your toddler to use a spoon independently. You can also form cooked cream of wheat into finger-friendly shapes like patties or bars that can be lightly toasted or pan-fried for easier handling. As your toddler's chewing skills improve, you can adjust the thickness to suit their preferences and introduce a wider variety of mix-ins and toppings.

Nutrition highlights

Cream of wheat is a source of carbohydrates for energy and contains some protein to support growth and development. Many varieties are enriched with iron and B vitamins, though iron levels vary by product, so it's beneficial to pair cream of wheat with iron-rich foods or fortified varieties. It is also easily digestible, making it a gentle option for babies new to solids.

Allergen information

Cream of wheat contains wheat and gluten, which are common food allergens. When introducing it for the first time, offer a small amount and watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.
