Cauliflower — prep card

Category: vegetableChoking risk: low

6–8 months

Steam or roast cauliflower florets until very soft, tender enough to mash between your fingers. Serve whole florets with the stem left on as a handle, or cut large wedges from the head that are roughly the length and width of two adult fingers placed together. You can also offer a whole roasted cauliflower steak, which gives baby a large, easy-to-hold piece to gnaw on.

9–11 months

Continue steaming or roasting cauliflower until soft, and now you can offer smaller, bite-sized florets as your baby's pincer grasp develops. Cut the florets into pieces roughly the size of a 10p coin, or serve thin strips if your baby prefers. The pieces should still mash easily between your fingers to ensure safe chewing and swallowing.

12–24 months

At this age, you can offer soft cooked cauliflower in a variety of shapes and sizes to match your toddler's growing chewing skills, including small florets, chopped pieces, or mashed into other dishes. Continue cooking until soft, though the texture can be slightly firmer than before as chewing skills improve. Cauliflower works well mixed into pasta, rice dishes, or served as a simple side vegetable.

Nutrition highlights

Cauliflower is rich in vitamin C, which supports immune function and helps the body absorb iron from other foods in the meal. It also provides fibre for healthy digestion, along with folate and vitamin K. As a low-calorie, nutrient-dense vegetable, cauliflower is a wonderful way to introduce babies to cruciferous vegetables early on.

Allergen information

Cauliflower is not considered a common allergen and allergic reactions to it are rare. While most babies can enjoy cauliflower without concern, watch for any signs of discomfort or unusual reactions when introducing any new food.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/cauliflower
