6–8 months

Rinse the anchovies well to remove excess salt, then mash them into a smooth paste using a fork or the back of a spoon. Check carefully for any small bones by running your fingers through the mash. Spread a thin layer on toast fingers, mix into mashed potato or sweet potato, or stir into baby's usual porridge or grain for added flavour and nutrition.

9–11 months

Continue to rinse and mash the anchovies thoroughly, checking for bones. At this age, you can mix mashed anchovy into pasta, rice, or couscous, or spread it on small pieces of toast for self-feeding. You can also stir it into soft scrambled eggs or blend it into a simple tomato sauce for extra protein and omega-3s.

12–24 months

Mash the anchovies and check for bones as usual, then incorporate them into family meals. Spread mashed anchovy on crackers or bread, stir it into pasta dishes, or mix it into mashed vegetables or grains. Keep portions moist by mixing with a little olive oil or mashed avocado, and continue to use anchovies as a flavourful seasoning rather than the sole protein on the plate.

Nutrition highlights

Mashed anchovy is exceptionally rich in iron, which supports healthy brain development and helps prevent anaemia in growing babies. It's also an excellent source of protein for building strong muscles and tissues, and provides omega-3 fatty acids that support brain and eye development. Additionally, anchovies contain calcium and vitamin D, which work together to support bone health.

Allergen information

Anchovy is a fish and therefore a common allergen that must be introduced carefully. When offering anchovy for the first time, serve it on its own in a small amount and watch for signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

Always supervise meals. Adjust textures to your baby's stage. Medical questions belong with your health professional. Source: babyledweaningfoods.com/foods/anchovy-mashed
